"Former College Teacher Dead

Mrs. Anna Acklin Webb, long revered as a teacher and dean of women at Waynesburg College but who for a number of years has lived at Washington, Pa., died there early yesterday after an extended illness.

A native of Carmichaels and daughter of the late Samuel J. and Eliza Porter Webb [sic Acklin], she spent her early life in the Carmichaels section. She received her early education in that community and taught in the public schools there for a few years before entering Waynesburg College.

A graduate of the class of 1886 with the degree of bachelor of arts, she was honored many years later by the honorary degree of doctor of literature from her alma mater.

Following her graduation from college she taught for many years in the west, serving as high school principal at Ash Grove, Mo., acting as professor of literature at Drury College in Springfield, Mo., and later being head of the Latin and Greek departments of the College of the Ozarks in Missouri for five years.

In 1894 she returned to Waynesburg College as instructor of English and history and as dean of women until 1903. She became a legend to undergraduates of that time. Mrs. Webb taught at the college through the years of its early struggles and shared in the self-denial which characterized the attitude of faculty members of that time.

At a memorial service in chapel yesterday morning Dr. Paul R. Stewart, president of the college, praised her as being typical of the self-denying type of teacher whose devotion to duty and interest in their profession constituted the foundation stones on which small colleges such as Waynesburg rest. She was ranked by Dr. Stewart as one of the seven outstanding dean of women who have served the college.

For the past several years she has served on the board of trustees of the college, being one of the first women elected to this group.

She held master of arts degree from the University of Chicago and the degree of doctor of philosophy from Boston University. She had also studied at Harvard and Toronto University post-graduate departments. After leaving Waynesburg College she was head of the English department at Wilkinsburg High School until 1907.

Long a member of the Presbyterian Church, she was a Sunday school teacher for 20 years.

Her husband, the late Shelly Lee Webb, an attorney and also a former teacher at the College of the Ozarks, died some years ago.

Immediate survivors include nephews and nieces."
