Martha Rebecca Alden was born in November 1860 to Andrew Jackson & Beady Elizabeth Alden. She grew up in Cairo, Illinois. She trained as a stenographer and a milliner. For a time she moved to Benton, Illinois to work with her Aunt as a hat maker. She never married and at the age of 52 went to live with her widowed brother-in-law, Dr. Albert Harrison in Rockford, Illinois. Her younger sister, Myrtle Alden Harrison, passed away during the influenza epidemic in 1913 and left three young children. She helped raise her nieces and nephew until they were grown and in college. In the mid-1920's she moved from Rockford, Illinois to Waterloo, Iowa to live with her younger sister, Elizabeth Alden Reynolds and her mother Beady Elizabeth Alden. She lived there until she passed away in 1936. She is on the far right of the first photo and on the left in the second photo. She was beloved by all and was known as "Mattie".
