CUBA CITY, Wis. -- Delbert Francis "Big Del" Guler, 83, of 621 North Madison St., Cuba City, died at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at home, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Cuba City, with the Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, where the rosary will be recited by the Catholic Daughters at 2:45 p.m. Friends also may call from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1925, at home in Lafayette County, Cuba City, son of Leonard and Frances (Wick) Guler. "Delbie" graduated from Cuba City High School in 1943.

He was drafted into the Navy in 1944. He served on the USS McCracken and participated in the invasion of Okinawa. He was discharged in May 1946. He then married Rose Marie Hendricks on May 6, 1947, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cuba City.

Delbert graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1950. He managed a grocery store in Albany, Wis., for two years and then moved back to Cuba City. "Delbie" worked for Russell Pinch at the local IGA store and then later owned and managed the Royal Blue Store in Platteville. He then worked at Southwest Health Center in maintenance/housekeeping while also driving school bus in Cuba City.

Delbert enjoyed coaching boys basketball in the first-through fourth-grade levels for 14 years at St. Rose School. He and Rose Marie were season ticket holders for boys basketball games since 1953.

"Delbie" enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing cards, telling a good joke, driving school bus, attending Cuba City sporting events and handing out bubble gum and chestnuts to everyone. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Rose Marie; his children, Tom (Diana) Guler, of Cuba City, Dr. Dan (Jody) Guler, of Neenah, Dr. Paul (Renee) Guler, of Platteville, Tim Guler, of Cuba City, and Mary (Dr. Steve) Dalsing, of Hazel Green; 11 grandchildren, Chad, Curt and Brad Guler, Meghan Lippert, Allison, Carrie and Erin Guler and Ashley, Abbey, Tyler and Maggie Timmerman; two sisters-in-law, Ava Guler, of Cuba City, and Helen (Jack) Martin, of Cottage Grove; and two great-grandchildren on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Orville Peart; his brothers, LaVere, LaVerne "Jim," Leonard "Midge"; and a granddaughter in infancy.
