Master Sergeant Hensley first joined the United States Army in November of 1901. He was promptly sent to the Philippines with the 2nd Infantry Division. Later the Division was sent to Cuba for the pacification and MSgt Hensley was also sent with his unit. When the United States became involved in World War I, MSgt Hensley was with the 38th Infantry Regiment (Rock of the Marne) of the 3rd Division. He was eventually retired in October of 1930. He was awarded the Philippine Insurrection Campaign medal; the Cuban Pacification medal; the World War I Victory medal with Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Defensive Sector campaign clasps; the Presidential Unit Citation (the 38th Infantary Regiment actually were awarded 3 PUC for action in WWI); the Sharpshooter Badge with 1914 bar; the Expert Pistol Badge; the 38th Infantry Company shooting badge; and the 1929 NRA 9th Corps Area, shooting badge.
