Moved with his family to Iowa sometime after 1850. Came to the gold fields of Colorado in the spring of 1859 with his father, Carson Arbuthnot and his brothers, Samuel, James, and Charles. Returned to Iowa and later returned by 1861 when he settled at Haystack Mountain. He was appointed the Justice of the Peace for the town of Pella, and was a founding member of the Dunkard Church in Hygiene where he and his wife are buried. William and Mary donated $50 to build this church. HIs homestead was located at the west end of Niwot Road where the road turns north (so the road wouldn't cut through his property). He also had gone to Santa Fe with his brother James and purchased a military warrant there which he exchanged at the Denver Land Office for the 160 acres south of Haystack Mountain. The Haystack Mountain Golf Course now sits on the land where all of William's children were born. While branding a yearling colt at his Haystack Mt. Ranch, he was kicked in the chest and died a week later leaving his widow with six children to raise. After his death, with the funds from the sale of William's property, his wife purchased Haystack Mt. from the U.S. Government for $1.25 an acre for the 80 acres of the mountain.
