Curtis S. Whetzel

Long Beach, Wash.

Former Washougal resident Curtis S. Whetzel, 76, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at home.

Mr. Whetzel was born Jan. 24, 1923, in Metz, Ind., and moved to Washougal as a youngster. He graduated from Washougal High School in 1942.

He was a gunner's mate in the Navy during World War II and earned a Purple Heart.

He worked at the Crown Zellerbach paper mill in Camas and retired after 43 years. He moved to Long Beach in 1985.
Mr. Whetzel was a volunteer firefighter with the Washougal Fire Department for 25 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Leslie, at home; one daughter, Roxanne Kelly of Klamath Falls, Ore.; two sons, David and Curtis, both of Washougal; three brothers, Robert and Edwin, both of Washougal, and Wayne of Vancouver; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Penttila's Chapel by the Sea in Long Beach. Burial will be in Long Fir Cemetery in Long Beach. The casket will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Penttila's.
