The Bolivar Commercial, Tuesday, November 4, 2008: Dr. Samuel Duff Austin, 88, of Cleveland, died Monday, November 3, 2008, in Little Rock, Ark. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, November 7 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church with Dr. Wilson Benton and the Rev. Tim Starnes officiating. Burial will follow in North Cleveland Cemetery (should say Old Cleveland Cemetery) under the direction of Ray Funeral Home.

Dr. Austin was born on February 13, 1920, in Forrest to Dr. Orrin Oscar Austin and Mae Robins Austin. He served his country in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Captain. He graduated from Mississippi College with a bachelor's degree and Tulane University with a medical degree. He did his Internship at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. and his Residency in Surgery at Baptist Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.

He married Rebecca Lisanby on July 14, 1945, in Bristol, Tenn. Dr. Austin was a former president of the Bolivar County Medical Society, member of the Mississippi Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the National Rehabilitation Association, Theta Kappa Phi Medical Fraternity, the Exchange Club of Cleveland, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife Rebecca Austin of Cleveland; son Duff Richmond Austin (Lorna) of Maryville, Tenn.; three daughters Cathy Austin Smith (David) of Pontotoc, Susan Austin Stewart (John) of Opelika, Ala., and Melinda Austin Neill (Jim) of Brandon; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Pete Walker, Duff Neill, Billy Henderson, James Neill, Daniel Neill, Nathan Smith, John Austin Stewart and Deb Gee.

Memorials may be made to the Palmer Home, St. Jude Hospital, or the Save-A-Life of Cleveland.
