Helen Driver Witte met her Lord, Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004 at 1:27 a.m. She leaves behind her husband of 65 years, Lee G.
Witte; son, Gary and his wife Annette DeWert Witte, of Leo; grandson, Ken and wife, Liz Witte, of Evansville; grandaughters, Beth and husband Shannon Roberts, of Leo, Karen and husband Doug Lake, of Big Long Lake; great-grandchildren, Thomas and Maren Witte, Hunter and Jordan Roberts, Katie, Spencer and Mason Lake; care-givers, Bill Grasberger and Lisa Rorick; plus many church family, square dance friends, Texas friends and personal friends.

Helen was born in Lima, Ohio, Aug 31, 1916. She had many happy memories of her childhood and playing with Ada, her sister, and cousin, Phyhllis (Driver) Diller, the famous comedian. Her father, a Pennsylvania Railroad Conductor, moved the family to Fort Wayne where she attended South Side High School and moved to Monroeville in time for Helen to attend Monroeville High School for two years, where she graduated with high honors. She then attended a business school and went to work for Protective Electric, both in Fort Wayne. She married Lee, Aug. 20, 1939, and stopped working to become a wife and Mother. She enjoyed many things in her life. She was an active member of Monroeville United Methodist Church, the Woman's group, Eastern Star, she and Lee served as youth leaders for 13 years, Annette's Girl Scout leader for three years, baked wedding cakes and decorated, enjoyed crafting and made many wonderful things in her life. Helen was a great cook and will be remembered for her homemade ice cream, Christmas parties, Christmas candy and cookies. During this time in her life, she was bookkeeper for Lee's partnership, Marquardt and Witte Plumbing, Heating & Sheet Metal. She rejoined the work place in 1957, at Lincoln Nationals Life Insurance Co., where she will be remembered for her kindness, cheerfulness and steady work. At this time, Helen and Lee became campers and traveled and joined National Avion Association. They began square dancing and attended many National Square Dance Conventions. Her family has many memories of Helen and Lee dancing a "tip" in their colorful clothes. Helen enjoyed many weekends at Manapogo Park Campground, many scenic trips through the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and Isreal. Helen retired in 1979 and spent many winters in Alamo, Texas, just north of the Mexico border. They still danced, she still crafted, making gifts for a Mexican orphanage, and traveled with their friends. Helen was very proud of her husband, son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She lived her life as a Christian as a strong, but quiet example. She leaves a grieving husband and family, but joyfully joins her parents Lon and Linnie Driver, her sister Ada Driver Roth, and many Christian family and friends. We are certain she is seated near the Throne of Christ and smiling her gentle smile of Joy. Please commemorate Helen's life with donations to the Alzheimer's Association; Village of Heritage Van Fund; or Monroeville E.M.S.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, with calling one hour prior, in the Monroeville United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Phil Lake and Ralph Klinker officiating.
