Constance A. "Connie" Borca, 103, a longtime Iron Belt resident, died early Thursday morning, Oct. 23, 2008, in Hurley.
The former Constance Miller was born May 8, 1905, in Bay City, Wis., daughter of the late Peter and Amelia (Kuuzelman) Miller, and was the youngest of six brothers and sisters.

As part of a musical family, Connie played the piano since childhood studying with her sisters and in Villa Maria High School. She graduated from River Falls Teachers College and studied at the McPhail School of Music.

She taught in several schools in Wisconsin before she arrived in Iron Belt, where she met and married Vincent John Borca on Feb. 2, 1935. Mr. Borca preceded her in death on April 17, 1976.

While teaching in Iron Belt, Connie started a men's chorus which won accolades and awards at state music contests. She was an accomplished musician playing both the classical music Chopin Polanaises and improvised jazz stride piano in the tradition of Fats Waller and Art Tatum. She played for dances, silent movies and gave private lessons. Connie was the organist and choir director of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Iron Belt for approximately 60 years.

Surviving are her daughter, Karen Borca, New York City, N.Y.; her grandson, Jerry (Caryn) Kambitsis, Lake in the Hills, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Vincent, Nikolas and Emily; a sister-in-law, Dora Nolan, Stevens Point; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Connie was preceded in death by two brothers, Austin and Herbert Miller; and three sisters, Josie Marclevitz, Caroline Chelson and Lillian Todd.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant.

Rite of Committal and interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Iron Belt.

Luncheon will be served at the Iron Belt Community Center immediately upon return from the cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be Jerry, Vincent and Nikolas Kambitsis, Tom Bertagnoli, John and George Nolan, and Gerry Pardun.

Arrangements are with the Engstrom Funeral Home of Hurley.
