Frans Knol was born on September 20, 1897 in Leens, Netherlands. His parents were Jannes Jans Knol and Henderika Bottema. His father, Jannes died on January 29, 1903. Henderika and her four children (Grietje, Frans, Jannes, Bouwina) all came to the United States aboard the S.S. Ryndam and arrived at New York City on May 17, 1904. They traveled to Englewood, Illinois where Henderika's parents lived. Her parents, Frans and Bouwina Bottema had arrived in the US a year earlier, on April 28, 1903 along with several of their children. Henderika married William Wall who was also from the Netherlands sometime before 1907. They together had one daughter Elsie E Wall who was born in California in 1907. All of Henderika's children americanized their first name and took on WALL as their last name.
