- Although he had many patents relating to printing, today he is most remembered as the inventor of the modern square-bottomed paper bag with 2 longitudinal inward folds on the sides (U.S. Patent 123,811 on February 20, 1872 - "Improvement in Paper-Bags").
- He is also known in helicopter history for U.S. Patent 35,437 on June 3, 1862 for an "Aerial Machine".

On August 18, 1863, he married Margaret Doane Atwood (Died on September 26, 1911).

He is listed as being born in West Dennis, or Harwich.
