Born Martha Jane Peters to Tom PETERS and Martha Gilley Peters (who had married Jeremiah PATE in 1846 and James L. BRYAN in 1851), Martha Peters married James "Doc" Bryant, about whom almost nothing is known so far, who died before 1900. Martha Jane Peters Bryant had two children, Handy Washington Bryant and Jessie Frances Bryant. We have not found her in 1870 or 1880, but she lived in Gilley's Precinct, Dale Co., AL (now Wicksburg, Houston Co.), in 1900; in Pinckard, Dale CO. in 1910, and in Bibb City, the mill town north of Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA, in 1920. She worked in the mill and lived at different houses in Bibb City until she died in 1922, and was taken back to Wicksburg for burial.

She was "Grandma Bryant" to my grandmother, who kept treats for her and her sisters in her apron pocket and who talked about the 'little people.' In 1921, she was working as a mill operator, and when she died she had lived at 3213 Hansen Avenue in Bibb City for three years.
