July 20, 1861 First Enlistment as a Private with the 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in "C" Company. Promoted to SGT. on Apr. 25, 1863. He re-enlisted on Jan. 1,1864 as a Veteran. He also signed a consent form for his son Charles E. Walker to join him as a PVT in Co."C" with the 11th Missouri. They served together until the end of the war. Daniel was promoted to 1st SGT on Nov. 15, 1864 and promoted to 2nd LT on May 9, 1865. He and his son were Mustered out at Memphis, Tenn. on Jan. 15, 1866 and returned to Springfield. Daniel applied for a pension as a 2nd LT in Co. C, 11th MO Infantry on July 10, 1890 (#804291)

Died, at his home, 223 East Carpenter street, Sunday morning, Oct. 7, 1900, at 1:30 o'clock, Daniel I. Walker, aged 79 years. The death of Mr. Walker was sudden, and will prove a sad surprise to his many friends in Springfield. On last Friday he fell from the roof of his house, which he was shingling, receiving injuries which caused death. Mr. Walker is an old resident of Springfield and he is well and favorably known. During the civil war he enlisted in the Eleventh Missouri volunteers, which was recruited with Illinois men. After the close of the war he returned to Springfield and has since lived here. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. IL State Journal & Register, Springfield, IL 10-7-1900
