He attended schools in Sedgwick and Ovid. On Jan. 30, 1940, he married Mary Ann Lechman at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sterling. He farmed and fed cattle in the Sterling area his whole life. Mr. Gareis was a member of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association, and the Great Western Sugar Beet Growers Association. He received numerous Great Western Sugar High-Ten Grower's awards, and received a national award for the highest corn yield in the country. He was an avid baseball fan.
Mr. Gareis is survived by sons Rich Gareis, of Fort Collins, Ken Gareis and wife Marla, of Sterling, and Jim Gareis and wife Martha, of Sterling; sister Angie Akers; of Wichita, Kan.; brother Joe Gareis, of Westminster; grandchildren Julie Gareis, Jason Gareis and wife Connie, Trent Gareis, Tanner Gareis and Tessa Gareis, all of Sterling, and Tyler Gareis, of Denver; great-grandchildren Taylor, Carson and Harley Gareis, all of Sterling; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; infant grandson Christopher; brother Pete; sister Rose; and his parents.
Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church, Masses in Mr. Gareis' name, or the charity of the donor's choice.
