The kind words written by John F. Sprague in the Sprague Journal, 1926 of Chandler M. Woods could easily be said of Mercil. "As a neighbor, kind and obliging, as a friend, loyal and true, he never knew the meaning of the word deception." At Mercil's funeral, it was said of him. "There was a man without guile."

He held a Massachusetts electrician's license and was a motor winder at S. A. Woods Machine Co., in Boston, MA. He was a member of the Church of Christ and helped in the building of the Church of Christ building in Unity, ME. He lived in Somersworth, MA for many years and later in Portland, ME. He was a gentle man and well liked by everyone who knew him. The compiler of this record was almost certain he never told anything but the truth, and was certainly a man of integrity. He never married.
