Died, at the family residence, 413 North Fourth street, at 1:25 p.m., Friday, May 2, 1902, of heart failure, Dr. Edward Artsman, aged 86 years, 9 months and 29 days. The death of Mr. Artsman was very sudden yesterday morning. He was in the back yard splitting kindling wood and doing other light work in which he took pleasure. When he returned to the house he sat down on the porch and shortly after complained of being unable to see and of faintness. He was helped into the house and a physician called, but the efforts of the physician were of no avail.

The deceased was a native of Zera, in Germany, and came to the United States in 1832. After spending some time in Ohio and Kentucky he came to Springfield in 1851 and established a clothing store. A year or two later he moved to Curran township and engaged in farming until 1865, when he returned to the city. For some years he practiced medicine here until the approach of age required him to retire from active life. In 1846 he married Miss Mary Dean, who, with four of their children, survive him. They are: Oscar A. Artsman, with whom the deceased resided at 414 North Fourth street; Edward W. Artsman of Chicago; Mrs. Eva Wertz, of Bloomington, and Mrs. Lucy Work, of Chicago.

Dr. Artsman was a man of liberal education, being well-read, well-informed and a student. His disposition was an enviable one and he was of a retiring nature, preferring the quiet and happiness of his home to the bustle of the outside world. The funeral will be held on Sunday.
