AGNES M. ZIEGER
July 1, 1910 - Nov. 9, 2008
SOUTH BEND - Agnes M. Zieger, 98, went to be with the Lord on
November 9th. She was a lifelong resident of South Bend. She was
born in South Bend on July 1, 1910, to the late Homer James and
Francis Mary (Auer) Perkins. She was a graduate of St. Joseph
Academy in 1924. She was married to Clarence "Pat" Joseph Zieger on
September 25, 1935, in St. Patrick's Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband; brothers, Homer F. Perkins and Joseph Perkins;
and a son, Michael. She was a member of The Legion of Mary at St. Anthony's, Harvest
House, and was a Real Services volunteer. If there was anything that needed to be
done, she was always there to help. She is survived by a daughter, Kathy (Tom)
D'Haeze of Michigan City; grandchildren, Brian (Jennifer) D'Haeze (great-
grandchildren, Benjamin and Mary Katharine), Kimberly (Warren) McConkey, Kris
(Tim) Chapman (great-grandson, Cole) and Steve DePastine. Agnes took special pride
in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their many accomplishments which
brought her endless joy. Her extended family includes a godchild, nieces, cousins,
friends, and honorary grandchildren. These individuals and many others have enriched
her life through their caring and loving actions. Agnes was an avid Notre Dame sports
fan. She always had a "green thumb" and took pride in her flowers. Agnes would
answer to many names through her lifetime, whether it was Mom, Grandma,
Godmother, Aunt Judy, Great-Grandma, "Toots" or Aggie, each person had a special
name for her. She was energetic, fun-loving, and a colorful story-teller. Agnes could
walk into a room of strangers and leave the room full of friends. She felt her calling
was to put a smile on someone's face every day! She was also an inspiration for those
who face challenges, because her iron will could get her through anything. In the spi rit
of Agnes life, consider bringing a smile to someone who needs cheering, pray the
Rosary, say thank you to people who work tirelessly at their jobs, volunteer an hour,
visit a friend in the nursing home who might not otherwise see a friendly face that
day, or pick up the phone and call someone who is lonely. Life is too short, as Agnes
believed, to wait until tomorrow to let someone know that you love them. She lived
her life giving back the blessings that God gave in her lifetime, and was at peace wh en
the Lord called her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov.
14, in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, South Bend (corner of Ironwood and
Jefferson), with interment following at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the HICKEY Funeral Home,
3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, where a Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Memorial
contributions may be made in Agnes' name to the charity of the donor's choice. A
special thank you to Harbor Light Hospice and the staff of Life Care Center of Michigan
City.
