Son of Leroy Baird (1875-1944) and Emma Hinkle Baird (1886-1968). Younger brother of Julian James Baird (1908-1920).

Corporal Baird first joined the California National Guard in August of 1932 and was later honorably discharged in March of 1933. He later joined the United States Army Air Corps in June of 1941 and was honorbly discharged in January of 1946. He was awarded the Army Good Conduct medal, the American Defense Service medal, the American Theater Campaign medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal and the World War II Victory medal.
