Adelene G. Maechtlen
Adelene G. (Smith) Maechtlen, of Clearwater, age 101, loving Matriarch and role model for her family, passed away Monday morning, November 10, 2008. Adelene Gladys Maechtlen was born on July 3, 1907 in Holton, Kansas. She was the second of six children born to her parents. Charles and Susie (Hovey) Smith. She attended Springbank School which was heated by a coal stove and she carried her lunch to school in a Karo Syrup bucket. For High School, she rode the train to school from Bayneville at 8 a.m. and returned at 5 p.m. She played on the Girls Basketball team and married her High School sweetheart. On November 18, 1925, she was united in marriage to Herman "Dutch" Maechtlen in Wichita, Kansas. Adelene was recently honored at the Clearwater Alumni Banquet as the oldest living graduate.
She and her husband raised four children on the Maechtlen homestead (4 miles east and ½ mile north of Clearwater) during the depression. Her positive attitude, beautiful smile, hugs, Christian values, love and caring, kept her family bonds strong. Adelene always relied on God for spirit and the will to press on. The depression's effects weren't all negative, as all four of her children grew up to the followers of God. Her positive attitude, contagious smile, and strong hugs kept her family bonds strong.
Memorial Services will be held 10am, Friday, November 14, 2008 at Clearwater United Methodist Church. Memorials: Clearwater United Methodist Church, 130 N. First, Clearwater, Kansas 67026 and Hospice Care of Kansas, 808 S., Hillside, Wichita, Kansas 67211.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Dutch Maechtlen; daughter, Ruth Hackerott Marlett; grandson, Mark Bonham; brothers, Albert, Milton, and Arthur Smith; sister, Margaret Profitt. She is survived by her daughters, Vivian (Marvin) Rink of Maize, Norma (Byron) Bonham of Afton, OK; son, Kenneth (Marilyn) Maechtlen of Clearwater; sister, Mildred Faye of Panace, NV; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
