Chico Enterprise, Friday, April 2, 1897: "Mrs. Ellen E. Coon. Death of an Old and Highly Respected Resident of Durham. The numerous friends of Mrs. Ellen E. Coon, of Durham, will be grieved to hear of that excellent lady's death, which occurred at the family residence near Durham, at an early hour this morning. Although Mrs. Coon had been ailing for some time, her condition was not thought to be dangerous until a few days ago, when it was evident that she could not survive long. Heart failure was the immediate cause of death. Deceased was a native of Kentucky, aged 53 years. For nearly 30 years past she has resided near Durham, where her husband, Allen T. Coon, is engaged in farming. Mrs. Coon was a most estimable Christian woman, and prior to her last sickness was an active worker in the Christian Church. During her long residence in this county her many excellent qualities have become more widely known, and all who knew her can testify to her worth. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning, from the family residence, two miles from Durham, on the Durham and Dayton road."

Coon Descendants, by Frances Davis McTeer, 1979, (pg. 170): "Ellen E. Matlock, b. in Kentucky in 1844, d. in Butte Co., 2 April 1897. [The first wife of Allen Thurman Coon.]"
