John and Annie moved to Dallas County, TX from Rhea County, TN, in the fall of 1881. They traveled down by train to join John's brother, Bill (William G. Broyles), who had moved to Wilmer about a year earlier. About a year later, John purchased land near Lancaster which he farmed about 20 years. After selling it, he ran a grocery store in town for a while before retiring. He died a relatively young man (by Broyles standards) when struck by a train at a railroad crossing at age 75.
