Claude was the son of Isaac Luther Caughron and Levonia McMillan, originally from Cocke County Tenn who moved to the High Point, NC area and raised their family. He was the 5th born child of their 11 children and the only one that died in infancy. He is buried next to his parents.

His death was a premature birth and he was extremely delicate at birth.

The children of his parents in order of birth were: William "Otey", Phillip Wesley "Willard", Ruby Reitzel, Nellie Matilda, Claude Haskel, Sarah "Allene", Mary "Juanita", Everett Luther, Jack Linville, Wanda Marie and Robert "Bobby" Thomas Walter Caughron. After his death this left 5 boys and 5 girls who lived to adulthood.
