Memorial services for Gerald "Butch" Johnson, 72, of Lake Benton will be Friday, August 8, 10:30 am at Diamond Lake Chapel of rural Lake Benton. Visitation is Thursday from 5:00 – 8:00 pm with prayer service at 7:00 at Hartquist Funeral Home, Utoft- Johansen Chapel in Lake Benton. Visitation continues on Friday at Diamond Lake Chapel one hour prior to the service. Interment is in Diamond Lake Cemetery. Arrangements are provided by Hartquist Funeral Home, Utoft- Johansen Chapel in Lake Benton, Randall Hartquist, Christopher Johnson, Jeffrey Hartquist, and Daren Preszler, Directors.

Gerald Ronald "Butch" Johnson was born May 13, 1936 to Hubert and Metta (Nelsen) Johnson in Drammen Township, northwest of Lake Benton, Minnesota. He and his family moved to Diamond Lake Township in 1941. He was baptized and confirmed in Diamond Lake Lutheran Church. Butch attended District 4 country school through the 8th grade and then graduated from West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, Minnesota on March 26, 1954. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany for 16 months and reached the rank of Private First Class upon his honorable discharge. Butch farmed with his father and brother Larry until the mid 1980s.

On March 13, 1974 he was united in marriage to Vivian B. Newell and they continued farming until moving to Lake Benton, where they operated Hill Top Gas Station until their retirement. They then moved to Hole-in-the- Mountain Apartments where he continued to live following Vivian's death in 1993. On July 27, 2008 Butch was admitted to Tyler Healthcare Center, Tyler, Minnesota where he died Friday, August 1, 2008 at the age of 72 years, 2 months, and 18 days.

Butch was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton. Following his military service, he was active in Henry Sollie American Legion Post #10, the 40/8 American Legion Affiliate, and was Director of Lincoln County Sons of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, softball, baseball, and football. He especially enjoyed time spent with family and friends.

Butch is survived by a brother, Larry Johnson and his wife Janis of Mesa, AZ, and two sisters, Ardis Fehrman and her husband Bud and Faye Rochel and her husband Gerry, both of Lake Benton, MN; sister-in-law Ruth Johnson of Lino Lakes, MN; five step-children: David Newell, John Newell, Rick Newell, Robin Ritter, and Pam Smith; 13 step-grandchildren, and 12 step-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, his parents, sister and brother-in-law Lyle and Bernita Larson, brother Raymond Johnson, and an infant sister.
