Mattie was born near Des Moines, Iowa, December 15, 1878, to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Zell. In 1879, she, with her parents and brother, Ben, started across the plains in a covered wagon. At the end of four months on the road they arrived in Prineville and settled on a ranch about 2-1/2 miles northeast of Prineville. Mattie attended her first school on McKay Creek.

When Mattie was about eight years old, the family moved to Farewell Bend. While they were living there, Henry Edwards-on his way from Eastern Oregon to Medford-- stopped overnight at their place. Later the Zells moved back to Prineville, and on July 7, 1899, Henry drove from Medford to marry Mattie.

The couple returned to Medford. During the time they lived in Jacksonville, their son, Wilbur, was born. They returned to Prineville and settled on Powell Butte, where they lived until the drought drove them to town.

The other children-- Ernest, Velma, Verna and Dorothy-were born in Prineville or Powell Butte.

Henry passed away on May 3, 1949, just one month and four days before they were to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Mattie passed away on January 13, 1956.
