Betty Bell, as we all called her was my cousin by marriage. I practically spent many of my younger years around her. Betty Bell was married to my cousin Bobby Cothern. They had three kids together, Desiree Lynn, Robert Edwin and Danielle Hope Marie (my lil' firecracker!). We moved from the double we lived in next door to Betty Bell in early 1978. I had no clue that I would only get to see Betty Bell a few more times in the coming years. Betty Bell & Bobby would divorce in the mid 80's. Most of my family would blame the divorce soley on Betty Bell. But living next door to them, I knew that it takes two to tango! A lot of my childhood memories are centered around Betty Bell, Bobby, Lynn, Lil' Bob and Dani. We used to have so much fun. Betty Bell was a good mom and treated her kids very sweetly. It took at lot for her to spank them. I used to love to watch Betty Bell eat! She enjoyed every bite! We used to pool our money and get fried chicken and french fried potatoes from a store on the south side, Open Pantry. We used to have some great times. Danielle used to holler through a hole under our sink and ask for some ginger snaps but she called them firecrackers! I lost track of them all after we moved away. I last saw Bobby,Dani & Lynne at Uncle Howard's funeral in 1993. Betty Bell passed in 1997 at the age of 46 from lung cancer, according to Dani she didn't suffer too much and was not sick very long. This came after she had married Leonard Verdine and had two children with him. I have heard they had a good life together. My mom was very sad over Betty Bell's death, she said many times after that that she "was a good girl". We were told of her passing several months after she had died. I was so sad that I never got to say goodbye. There were a lot of people who played an important part in my growing up, I have so many memories of Betty Bell. She still seems like she is still here. I now live on the street behind our old house on Town St. I walk by there and relive the memories. I will always love you and miss you, Betty Bell. Rest In Peace Sweet Lady.
