Alfred Timothy Little, 89, of Austin died peacefully at home with his wife Audrey by his side on Monday, September 1, 2003, after a long illness. (twenty-five year struggle against Parkinson's disease)

Alfred T. Little was born to Luther Edward and Lou Ada Self Little on October 23, 1913, in Yowell, Texas, and spent most of his childhood in the rural communities between Commerce and Cooper, Texas. He earned two degrees from East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, a B.S. degree in 1936 and an M.A. degree in 1946. In 1955, he graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with an Ed.D degree in educational administration.

On August 25, 1939, Alfred married Audrey Faye Robnett in Klondike, Texas. To this union was born one daughter, Patricia Ann.

Dr. Little chose education as his profession. Early in his career, he was teacher and principal at Century School in Hunt County, 1936-38; principal and superintendent of schools in Ben Wheeler, Texas, 1938-42; and trainer of sailors as a lieutenant in the United States Navy, 1942-45. After World War II, he was superintendent of schools in Emory, Texas, 1948-1952, teaching assistant at the University of Texas on a fellowship from the Kellog Foundation, 1952-54; assistant superintendent of schools in Midland, Texas, 1954-1955; superintendent of schools in Borger, Texas, 1955-1965; superintendent of schools in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, 1965-69; and director at the Texas Education Agency, 1969-75. He retired in 1975. Dr. Little is a member of Phi Delta Kappa honorary society and is cited in Who's Who In American Education.

Dr. Little was a civic and church leader in all the communities where he has lived. He has been president of the Rotary Club and chairman of the United Way. Alfred has been a member of the United Methodist Church since 1939. He taught Sunday School classes for twenty-five years and was chairman of the official board at various times and places. He is currently a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where he has been a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and has served as a member of the official board and as a delegate to the annual conference.

Alfred professed his belief in Christ at an early age and lived out his Christian faith by leading an upright life. During his many years of public service, he was much loved and respected as a man of honor and integrity.

Alfred is survived by his wife of sixty-four years and his caretaker for the last twenty years, Audrey Faye Robnett Little, of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Ben Boswell, of Austin; three grandsons, Brian Boswell, and twins, Robert Boswell and Richard Boswell, all of Austin; one brother, Arthur O. Little, of Ludlow, Kentucky; one step-brother, Doyce Doolin, of Klondike, Texas; two step-sisters, Mrs. Martha Choate of Dallas, and Mrs. Juanita Moore, of Klondike.

Family members who preceded Alfred in death include his parents, Luther and Lou Ada Self; three brothers, Willie Little, Charlie Little, and Claude Little; and three sisters, Mrs. Eva Lee Bell, Mrs. Winnie Stringer, and Mrs. Daphana Davis; two step-brothers, Eugene Doolin and Clarence Doolin; and one step-sister, Mrs. Florene Wickersham.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, September 5, 2003, at Jones Funeral Home in Commerce, Texas. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 6, 2003, at Jones Funeral Home in Commerce, Texas, with Alfred's brother, Rev. Arthur O. Little officiating. Pallbearers will be Alfred's grandsons and nephews. Interment will follow at the Shiloh Cemetery at Klondike, Texas.
