Warrant Officer Layel was a career U.S. Navy veteran with 23 years of service. He started his Navy career as an enlisted man, serving on the USS Amphion (AR13), USS Camden (AOE2), USS Vulcan (AR5) and the USS Casa Grande. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal, the American Theater Campaign medal and the WWII Victory medal.
