He started his Navy career as an enlisted man, serving on the USS Amphion (AR13), USS Camden (AOE2), USS Vulcan (AR5) and the USS Casa Grande. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal, the American Theater Campaign medal and the WWII Victory medal.
