George was the sixth of eleven children. In his early teens he worked as a slate picker in the coal mines. As an adult, he worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad as a fireman.
On March 18, 1893, he married Elizabeth Girard at Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and the ceremony was performed by Rev. John Wagner. The couple moved to Wilkes-Barre, where they raised two sons: Archie and Harold.
