Robert enjoyed his time in the United States Army, retiring in 1974. He worked for the City of Oklahoma City, Animal Control, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Post Road Baptist Church where he was the noted grill master. Robert loved to talk on the CB radio around the world and was always busy tinkering and fixing things. He worked outside where he enjoyed the garden and riding the lawn mower.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Richard Thornton and his first wife, Shirley Geurin Thornton.
Survivors include his wife, Renee Thornton of McLoud; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael J. and Debbie Thornton of California, Robert J. and Melissa Thornton II of Harrah, Oklahoma and Frederick W. and Brittney Meyer of North Carolina; three daughters, Pauletta Hollis of Washington, Robin J. Miller of Oklahoma City and Tiffany Watt of McLoud, Oklahoma; one brother, Vern Thornton of Oklahoma City; one sister, Olive Miller of Harrah, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Post Road Baptist Church, 2209 N. Post Road, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73141.
Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31, 2004 at Post Road Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with Rev. Tommy Mosher officiating. Interment will follow at Dale Cemetery, Dale, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Smith~Parks Funeral Service in Harrah, Oklahoma.
