MR. M.F. DAVIS DIED LAST MONDAY NIGHT - FUNERAL AT PLEASANT HILL WEDNESDAY ATTENDED BY MANY FRIENDS

Mr. M.F. Davis passed away Monday night, about 10 o'clock at his home eight miles northeast of Camilla. He was taken suddenly with acute indigestion and his feble condition made him an early prey. Death resulted about three hours after he was seized with the symptoms. A wave of genuine sorrow swept over the county with the announcement of Mr. Davis' death. Few men were better known in Mitchell county and none more highly respected. He had been a citizen of this county since before the war and his life and character was such is to endear him to all who came in contact with him. For years he had been failing in health and about a year ago suffered a slight stroke of paralysis and since then his friends have been prepared to hear at any time the sad announcement that came Tuesday morning. Mr. Davis had almost reached his eighty-fourth milestone. He was the oldest Mason in the county and among the most faithful, both in his loyalty to the order and in the practice of its precepts. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist church and was a consistent Christian. Mr. Davis moved to Mitchell county about sixty years ago from Wilkinson county. When the war began he joined Company E of the Seventeenth Georgia Volunteers. This company was organized here in Mitchell county by Mr. John A. McGregor who became the captain. Mr. L. H. Adams and Mr. Gus Newsome are among the few members of this company still living. They saw some of the hardest fighting of the war and only about one-third of the original company lived to get back home. Mr. Davis was the father of a large family. His wife preceded him to the grave about two years ago. The living children are Messrs. M. O. Davis, Isaac Davis, John Davis, Mrs. Hetty Prevatte, of Thomasville, Mrs. J. W. Williams of this county, Mrs. T. C. Cleveland, of Greenville,S.C., and Mrs. C. E. Maples of Newton. He is also survived by three brothers: Messrs. D. B, T.R. and B.C. Davis, all of this county. The funeral services were held at Pleasant Hill church Wednesday at 12 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. S.O. Thomas, assisted by Rev. H. N. Burnett. Brothers Masons acted as pall bearers and after the services in the church the Masons took charge and interment was made with Masonic honors.
