On Thursday evening, June 14, 2018, Our Lord took our beloved Emily Stewart Phillips by the hand and “restoreth her soul,” back to Him. Emily passed away at the Bowers Hospice House following a very brief illness. She was in her 83rd year.

The second of four children, Emily Rae Walker was born on July 9, 1934, at Welch. She was the daughter of the late Delpha Arlet Walker (1905-1986) and Velva Cornelia Brooks-Walker (1911-1963). Emily is the fond sister of Brooks Walker, Delphine Walker-Hill and Nancy Walker-Acord who all survive.

Emily spent her childhood in Pineville, graduating from Pineville High School, Class of 1952. She furthered her studies at Bluefield State College, graduating with a degree in education. Emily will be remembered as a dedicated teacher at Pineville Grade School, where she taught for many years. Emily was first married to Ted "Teddy" N. Stewart (1933-1990) on August 3, 1951 in Rockview, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1951, Page 51, Application Date: July 28, 1951). They were the beloved parents of Linda Stewart-Wenke and Jeanne Stewart-Lowe. Upon Ted’s passing, Emily would settle in Beckley and was fortunate to remarry to Ray Gene Phillips Sr. (1927-2007). She and Ray were blessed with many happy years before his death as well. In Beckley, Emily became a member of Calloway Heights Baptist Church and enjoyed bowling at Leisure Lanes.

In addition to her siblings, those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Linda Stewart-Wenke and husband Dave Wenke, and Jeanne Stewart-Lowe and Dewey Lowe. She was the doting “Nannie” of Travis Lowe and Carmen Lowe-Boso and her husband Lee Boso; the proud great grandmother of Nina Boso and Brooks Boso. Emily was very fond of Ray Phillip’s children and their families, the late Ray Gene Phillips (Deceased) and his wife, Bonnie Phillips who survives, and Betty Phillips-Lusk and her husband TomLusk. There is a large extended family of the Walkers and Stewarts that Emily held in high regard.

On Monday, June 18, 2018 at 1:00 pm there will be a “Service of Remembrance” for Emily in the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The Rev.’s Dewey Lowe, Doc Adkins and Bill Parker will be officiating. Emily will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park.
