When the Revolutionary War broke out, though Barnard was only a boy of fifteen he joined with his father in assisting in the work of preparing defenses. He was tall and strong and had learned much from companionship with his father and uncles. His service follows:
"Barnard Eddy. Rev. pensioner, enlisted June, 1775, to May, 1779; Private under Capts. Barnard Eddy, Elliott; Lt. and Capt. in May 1779. b. July 12, 1762; d. July 3, 1847. In 1775 in co. of Capt. Barnard Eddy to Apr. 15, 1776, transferred to laboratory at Providence Aug. 1, 1778; on sloop "Lively", commissioned Lieut. of "Lively" and later in command. He had a pension."
In 1800 he was in business in Cranston on the Pawtuxet River. In September 1815 a great gale swept through Providence. The Providence River rose to a great height. The old Eddy Homestead on Eddy Point was swept away down stream and nearly al of the family treasures were lost.
