Shirley Jean Wheeler, age 83 of Custer, SD, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Custer Regional Hospital with her children and grandchildren by her side.
Shirley was born January 20, 1925 in Shelton, NE to James and Olive (Omey) Coon, She graduated from Shelton High School in 1942 and moved to Custer to be near her older sister. She met and married Robert M McClaren in 1944. In 1953 she was united in marriage to Perry K. Wheeler in Custer. Perry's work took them to Edgemont and Winner before returning to Custer in 1967.

Shirley was devoted to her family and will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Robert W (Karen) McClaren , Pringle and Rick (Wanda) Wheeler, Custer; daughter, Glenda Mae (David) Kline, Pringle; grandchildren, Ryne McClaren, Chadron, NE; Jenny (Jody) Woodward, Custer and Austin (Danielle) Wheeler, Custer and her special ‘greats', Landon and Hailey Grace Woodward; brothers, Verl Coon, Lincoln, NE; Dowayne (Cork) Coon, Sacramento, CA and sister, Ethylene Duncan, Florissant, CO.

She was preceded in death by her parents and Perry K. Wheeler; brothers, Stewart; Leland and Cecil; sisters, Beulah Korcek; Selma McCoy; Illabell McCoy and Janet Sindelar.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 31, 2008 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 1, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Custer with Pastor William Savery officiating.

A memorial has been established in Shirley's names to benefit the Custer County Ambulance Service.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer. Written condolences can be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com.
