Civil War Veteran. Was with Company A, 16th Missouri Cavalry. Was the last living member of GAR Post 102 (Florence, Colorado)

CIVIL WAR VET
DIES IN PENROSE
One of Fremont county's two Civil war veterans, J. N. M. Akin, 97, last surviving member of the Florence G. A. R. post, died at 5:30 Saturday morning at his home in Penrose after and illness dating back to last June 15.
His passing leaves only Comrade J. B. Smith of Canon City as sole survivor of the once-large number of veterans of the war of 1860-1865 who lived in this county.
Mr. Akin was born in Nashville, Tenn. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the 16th Missouri Cavalry at Lead Hill, Ark., and served throughout the war. He saw action in several noted battles and was with General Price on several of his raids into southern lines.
Until last spring, Mr. Akin enjoyed good health and walked without aid of a cane. Until he was 90 years of age, he rode horseback frequently, resisting all efforts to persuade him against the practice.
Children surviving are L. C. Akin of Tulsa, Okla., T. W. Akin and Mrs. W. H. Reeves of Penrose; one sister, a brother, nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Akin had lived in Penrose since 1921, coming there from Pueblo, where he moved in 1897. He had previously resided in Oklahoma, the Indiana Territory, going there as a young man after the Civil War.
Services will be at the Penrose Presbyterian church at 2 P. M. Monday. Burial will be in the Penrose cemetery by the Holt mortuary of Florence.
