Deceased Name: KIN, FRIENDS STUNNED BY YOUNG MAN'S DEATHFORMER FOOTBALL STAR MAURICE WHITE WAS FATALLY SHOT IN TAMPA.MOUNT DORA -- Family and friends of a former football star at Mount Dora High grieved Tuesday over the fatal shooting of the young man in Tampa.Maurice Karl White Jr., 19, was slain Sunday morning by a man who only moments earlier had been kicked out of White's apartment, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.A 2003 Mount Dora graduate, White had just started at Hillsborough Community College, said his mother, Faye White Powell."I don't know what happened or why this happened," she said Tuesday at her Jefferson Drive home. "He was a good boy. He was never in any trouble."Maurice White was in his apartment with his two roommates about 5 a.m. Sunday when the suspect returned with a gun and opened fire, according to the Sheriff's Office. When the roommates realized the man had emptied his gun, "they jumped on him and began beating him in an attempt to subdue him" until deputies arrived, the report said.Onique Lloyd White, 22, who is not related to the victim, was taken to University Community Hospital and later to the Hillsborough County Jail, where he was being held without bail, according to jail records. He was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, armed burglary and three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, according to a sheriff's office report. At Mount Dora High, Maurice White had a standout career, playing quarterback, wide receiver and free safety on the football team and competing on the track and weightlifting teams. After the 2001 season, he was chosen as a first-team wide receiver in the Lake Sentinel's all-Area Football Team for high school players in Lake and Sumter counties. He had caught 26 passes for four touchdowns in that season. In his first semester at the community college, studying computer science, he hoped to go to the University of South Florida and play football, his mother said."He wanted to play in the NFL," she said. "That's all he really wanted to do."He graduated from Mount Dora a year before his younger brother, Marcus White, who also played football."They [Maurice and Marcus] played together during his senior year," Powell said. "They were awesome together."She lovingly called her son "my brat" but said he was "very protective of his mother.""He would do anything I asked him to do," she said. "He was a very good son."He was "raised in the church" and attended Freewill Holiness Church of God in Apopka, said Powell, a caseworker for Lake Community Action Agency.Letitia Owens, 29, his sister, teasingly said her brother was "spoiled.""He always was able to get what he wanted," she said. "But he was a good brother. He was very quiet, but very nice."Off the playing field, Maurice White was a shy student who kept to himself, friends said Tuesday, but he was a tough athlete."He was good. He was very good," said Joe Burnett, 17, a senior cornerback and quarterback for Eustis High, who faced White on the field several times. "But he also had a lot of respect for his opponents."Joe Burnett and Craig Cosden, White's head coach at Mount Dora High, learned of the death from another player."It's too surreal to comprehend," Cosden said. "We're just stunned."White was a hardworking athlete who relished the game of football, his former coach said.In 2002, Cosden made the unusual move of replacing his son, Colin Cosden, with White as Mount Dora's starting quarterback.Cosden now is assistant coach at Eustis High, but he said his former players and coaches keep in touch."This is not only devastating for me, but for the entire community," Cosden said. "It truly has hit us to our bones."Hillsborough investigators said Onique White, armed with a knife, went to Maurice White's apartment at The Oaks Condominiums about 4:45 a.m. Sunday. Maurice and his roommates disarmed him and threw him out.He returned a few minutes later with a pistol and shot Maurice, the sheriff's report said. At the time, Onique White was free on $750 bail stemming from a June drug arrest and drivers license infraction.Investigators did not discuss the dispute, but a sheriff's spokesman said the roommates knew of Onique White and did not want him around "because they considered him a bad guy."Lt. Rod Reder praised the roommates for capturing the suspect."As far as we're concerned, they were apprehending a murderer," Reder said Tuesday.Funeral services for Maurice White will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Mount Dora, 1000 E. First Ave., with burial at Edgewood Cemetery in Mount Dora.Marvin C. Zanders Funeral Home in Apopka is handling arrangements.
