Mr. Williams moved to Streator from his father's farm about 10 miles NW of Streator in 1885. He started as clerk in Powers Hardware Store, then part owner of Powers & Williams and sole proprietor in 1904. The Store became Williams Hardware Company in 1912, moving into its "new" location at 115 S. Vermillion St. At that time it was known as the "largest hardware store in Illinois." The store was destroyed by fire in 1958. The Williams Storage Building at 128 S. Sterling St. still stands.

Mr Williams served as president of the Illinois Retail Hardware Association. He served on the school board, Union National Bank Board of Directors, and trustee of Riverview Cemetery Association.
