Private First Class Smith (service number 1230289) was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On July 27, 1953, he was returning from a patrol forward of "Outpost Berlin" in Korea, when he stepped on a mine. He was evacuated to the hospital ship USS HAVEN (AH-12) and died the following morning. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
