In 1973 he was appointed Deputy Treasury Secretary, and in 1974 he became Secretary, serving until 1977. Simon helped coordinate the Nixon and Ford administration responses to the energy crisis and economic inflation as Chairman of the Economic Policy Board and the Oil Policy Committee, and also authored two books, 1978's "A Time for Truth" and 1980's "A Time for Action." After leaving office, he became a successful venture capitalist. Simon was a 30-year member of the US Olympic Committee, serving as Treasurer from 1977 to 1981 and President from 1981 to 1985, and Chairman of the US Olympic Foundation from 1985 to 1997. He also served on the boards of more than 30 companies and numerous athletic organizations, colleges and charities. Personally active in charitable work, he also donated tens of millions of dollars to a variety of causes, including scholarships and hospitals, and the William E. Simon Foundation continues his philanthropy. The US Air Force Academy is home to the William E. Simon Center for Strategic Studies, and there is a William E. Simon Professorship at Lafayette College. In addition, the University of Rochester's graduate business school is named for him.
