Elizabeth Emma "Bette" Coates, 78, of Elsie, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, in Wheeler.

She was born Dec. 7, 1929, in Seminole, Okla., to Walter and Locke (Montgomery) Wentz. She was raised in Oklahoma.

On Aug. 7, 1948, she married Edwin Coates in Portland. He died in Seaside in 1986.

Mrs. Coates was a homemaker most of her life.

Family members said she enjoyed crocheting.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patti and Lynn Knavel of Elsie, Linda Coates of Albuquerque, N.M., and Nancy & Ken Allery of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a sister, Azelia Stevenson of Portland; two brothers, Joe Wentz of Portland and Walter Wentz of Cornelius; eight grandchildren, Scott Knavel of Seaside, Shawn Coates of Willamina, Rick Knavel of Astoria, Paul Coates of Portland, Sarah Coates of Albuquerque, Becky Coates of Idaho Falls and Tanya Coates of San Francisco; and her companion for many years, James D. Mendenhall of Elsie.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Sunnyhill (Elsie) Cemetery.
