Elizabeth was born on her family's farm outside of Newton. She married Jefferson Hughes in 1866 at the home of her parents near Newton, AL. The ceremony was performed by Mr. Richard Trawick, Justice of the Peace. After their marriage, Elizabeth and Jefferson Hughes lived on her parent's farm. All of their children were born on the farm. In 1893, the family moved to Dothan, AL, and lived on property bounded by Appletree and Crawford Streets, and then to 211 South Oates Street in Dothan which became the Hughes family home.
