Exerpt from Washington [PA] Reporter dated Nov. 13, 1867
Pike Run Items: Mr. John Birkinsha, known in this community as John Buck, was killed yesterday morning in a coal bank, about 2 miles up Pike Run. He was making a "shearing" and had one end cut off and was lying on his side "bearing in" when several tons broke loose and caught his head which was mashed almost flat. His son, who was the only person with him, ran out and gave the alarm, when 2 men happened to be near at hand, went in and extracated the lifeless body. Mr. Birkinsha was a good citizen and a very industrious man. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his untimely end.
