ROCKAWAY Twp. -- Robert A. Schiffner Sr. died on Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at Morristown Memorial Hospital, he was 84.

Born and raised in Wharton, he was a lifelong resident until moving to Rockaway Township five years ago.

Mr. Schiffner retired in 1985, after 31 years with Roxbury Board of Education as a phyical education teacher and drivers' education teacher. He was head football, baseball and girls softball coach during his 31-year tenure. He also coached a number of state and conference championship teams.

He was a Wharton High School Star athlete. a Peekskill Military Academy graduate, and a Syracuse University graduate, Class of 1950.

He was captain of the Syracuse football team in 1948, as well as its baseball team of 1949, a member of Syracuse Varsity Club and Syracuse Varsity Football Letterman Club, a member of Juvenile Conference Committee and Wharton Recreation Association and Wharton Senior Citizens. He was a founding member of Wharton Little League Association. He was a member of St. John's Methodist Church and former member of the Wharton Fire Department.

He was a member of the Wharton Board of Education from 1955 until 1962.

He served his country during World War II as an Army paratrooper of the 11th Airborne Division. He saw action in the Pacific theater. He was awarded numerous citations, including the bronze star, and was discharged from service in 1946. He was a member of the Wharton American Legion Post 91.

He was also a member of the Morris County Retired Educators Association (MCREA) and the N.J. Education Association (NJEA).

He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary A. (Pelka); his son, Robert A. Jr., and his wife, Margie, of Chester, and their children, Amy and Jeffrey; and his son, Randy, of Rockaway and his children, Steven and Lindsey; his brother, Joseph "Bud" Schiffner, and his wife, Ruth, of Rockaway Township. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 249 S. Main St., Wharton. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park, E. Hanover. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Wharton United Community Church at St. John's, 20 Church St., Wharton, N.J. 07885 will be appreciated.
