ROCKAWAY TWP. -- John C. Doll Jr. passed away on Thursday, March 1, 2007 at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville. He was 72.

He was born in Dover and lived there until marrying his wife of almost 50 years, Joyce, and moving to Rockaway Township in 1957.

He served his country honorably in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, from 1952 to 1956. He was stationed on the aircraft carrier the USS Wasp.

He was a member of the American Legion, Post No. 91 in Wharton, and past commander of the Memorial Post V.F.W. No. 1502.

He was a graduate of Dover High School, where he was a member of the varsity football and baseball teams. He completed his bachelor of science degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1972.

Mr. Doll was employed by Picatinny Arsenal for more than 42 years in various areas. During his last seven years at Picatinny, he was the Picatinny fire chief until his retirement in January of 2003.

He joined the Birchwood Fire and Rescue Company No. 4 in September of 1968. He served as chief in 1977, and has been the company president since 2005. He was the Rockaway Township department chief in 1995 and 1996, and was a life member of the New Jersey Firemen's Relief Association. For many years, he was a coach of the Rockaway Township Recreation Girls Softball League.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was an avid golfer and member of the Picatinny Arsenal Golf Club. He also loved to bowl and participated in the Picatinny Men's Bowling League on Monday evenings at Circle Lanes for many years until his death. He got great pleasure from watching his grandchildren's many sporting events.

He was a parishioner at St. Clement Pope and Martyr Roman Catholic Church in Rockaway Township, and was most recently serving as an usher and volunteer for bingo.

His parents, John Sr. and Elsie Doll; his brother, Roger; his infant son, Joseph; and his four-legged best friend, Tucker, all died previously.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce (Nazzaro); his daughters and son-in-laws, Jacqueline and Christopher Furth, and JoAnn and Thomas Garrett, all of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Jill and Vince Binkoski of Wharton; his five grandchildren, whom he adored, Kristin Furth, Kyle and Bailey Garrett, and Adam and Jack Binkoski; his sister-in-law, Joyce Doll of Mount Bethel, Pa.; his nephews and niece, William, Roger, and Judy Doll; and many very dear friends.
