Funeral of John J, Shonk.
The funeral of the late Hon. John J. Shonk occurred this afternoon from the family residence on East Main Street, and it was simple, characteristic of the life of the deceased. The remains reposed in a casket in the parlor at the residence and presented a natural appearance, resembling a deep peaceful sleep. A host of friends and acquaintances many of them coming a distance was present and viewed the remains taking their last farewell look at the remains. The service was conducted by Rev. J. Bradshaw, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which the deceased was a member. The pastor, Rev. Mr. Bradshaw, after reading scriptural passages, spoke a consolatory sermon, touching on the life of the deceased and his many good traits, and charitable disposition. His passing away removes a loving father and a good citizen. At the conclusion of the services the cortege wended its way to the Shawnee cemetery where the remains were reverently consigned to earth in the family plot. A large concourse of friends and neighbors gathered at the cemetery and showed by their presence their regard for the memory of the one that was esteemed by all. The pallbearers were all grandsons of the deceased; they were Edward, John, William, and Herbert Shonk, Jay Stevens and George Rennard.
