Daniel's parents were Daniel L. Downs, Sr, a native of England, and his wife, a Welsh lady. They, along with their five children, came to the United States in 1836.
Their youngest son, Daniel L. Downs, was born in Huntsville, Madison Co, AL. He was educated there and in 1857, he engaged in the mercantile business with his father in Tuscumbia. In 1862, he became a member of the LaGrange Cadets, Company B, Thirty-fifth Alabama Regiment, and was made orderly sergeant and participated in the attack on Baton Rouge, Aug 5th. After six months service, he was sent home on detached duty under Estes, who promoted him to a captaincy. His company was disbanded after about a year and he was ordered back to his original regiment.
He was in the column in front of Sherman in Georgia, and at the engagement of Peach Tree Creek. He was with Hood in Tennessee and the bloody battle of Franklin, where his regiment lost half its forces being killed or wounded. Daniel received a wound in his leg, which disabled him for life.
After this he was taken to Nashville, then to Tuscumbia, where he became a merchant in 1866 for four years. In 1874 he moved to Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama, still conducting his business and the management of his farm.
Daniel married in 1867 to Jennie E. Burleson, daughter of William and Minerva Stephenson Burleson. William Burleson was a pioneer and Indian fighter and one of the first settlers in Morgan Co, AL.
Daniel was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and the Knights of Honor.
