Born in Rochester, Ulster County, NY, a son of Levi and Hester B. Countryman Carney. By 1850 he was in Neversink, Sullivan County, NY and a laborer on his fathers farm. He married on June 3, 1855 Rachel M. Gorton daughter of Harmon and Jane Carney Gorton at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, by Stephen Andrews, "Justice of the Peace". They had two daughters; Eunice Carney, October 22, 1858-May 7, 1863, and Martha Jane Carney July 21, 1861-?.
Benjamin served in the Civil War enlisting September 4, 1862 at Monticello, NY and mustered in as a Private in Company G, 143rd NY Vol Inf Regt on October 9, 1862. He was stricken with Pneumonia and died January 27, 1864 at General Hospital No. 3, Nashville, TN.

Gravesite Details

Most of the land for Nashville National Cemetery was acquired shortly after the Civil War. The original interments were the remains of soldiers removed from temporary burial grounds around Nashville's general hospitals, and nearby battle fields.
