James was born at Brandon Hills Plantation near Natchez, MS. James enlisted in Confederate Service on November 29, 1863 as a Private in Company B, 12th MS Infantry. James served as a Special Aide to Gen. Patrick Cleburne in the J. C. Breckenridge Guards. James was wounded before the works at Franklin, TN in the same volley that killed Gen. Cleburne. James was captured and spent the remainder of the War as POW.
James' wife was Ann Hunt Archer.
