His son, John Thomas Cox, died on December 21, 1862, also in Mitchellville, two days before his father. Both enlisted in the 129th Illinois Infantry. William was worn out from marches in October and never recovered. John Thomas died of lung fever, the doctors said, according to William in letters to his wife. Those letters are in archives in Missouri. Extracts of those letters related to their experiences in the Civil War were published in the book by Robert Miller, “They All Wore a Star.“
