AUNT OF FDR DIES AT HOME IN 93RD YEAR
Mrs. Dora Forbes Well Known for Philanthropies
Balmville, N. Y.--(AP)--Mrs. Dora Delano Forbes, aunt of President Roosevelt, died yesterday afternoon at Algonac, her family estate at Balmville, after a short illness. She would have been 83 next month.
At her bedside at the time of death were her two sisters, Mrs. James Roosevelt, mother of the President, and Mrs. Price Collier, Tuxedo Park, and her brother, Frederic A. Delano, chairman of the National Planning Board.
In 1867, Mrs. Forbes married William Howell Forbes, who, like her father, was a trader in Chinese products, making his business headquarters in Paris, where he died in 1893. They had no children.
Mrs. Forbes, one of 11 children, was born at Northampton, Mass., a daughter of Warren and Katherine Robbins Delano. She received her education from private tutors and began a life of worldwide travels when 14.
Recently, Mrs. Forbes estimated to friends she crossed the Pacific Ocean 10 times and the Atlantic 50 times.
Since her husband's death, Mrs. Forbes spent nearly all her summers visiting his relatives in Paris. She remained in the French capital during the first World War and was one of the founders of the Lighthouse, a charitable institution assisting French soldiers blinded during the conflict.
Her charitable activities in Newburgh, near Balmville, were extensive, notably in co-operation with the Newburgh Lions Club. She carried on the philanthropies of her late sister, Mrs. Annie Delano Hitch, who donated a large tract of land in Newburgh which was converted into a municipal recreation park.
Funeral services will be this afternoon at Algonac, the Rev. Karl M. Chworowsky, pastor of the Unitarian Church of Our Father, Newburgh, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fair Haven, Mass., tomorrow.
-----
Note: She also married Paul Revere Forbes a mining engineer and brother of her first husband, on 11 Jun 1903 in Paris, France.
