I performed many hours of research to pin down who the father of John Emmett Murphy was. There are so many persons with that exact name. The only reference of value I've ever been able to find is "John Murphy" from Thomas B. Murphy, but nothing specifically referencing John "Emmett" Murphy. I still haven't found that perfect source online. It may exist (and will show up) as a family birth certificate, but for now the following will be adequate to link John Emmett Murphy to his father Thomas Bell Murphy who has a storied past from the beginning of Texas history.

Edited (for clarity) excerpt from the Life Sketch of Thomas Bernard Brown 1806 – 15 July 1890 • LCRX-1NG by Cindy Jo Kavanagh

Bernard Brown, son of Anthony Brown and Ann Brewer was baptized 4/9/1775 in St Mary's County, Maryland. He was born on the same day. He died August 8, 1848 in Lavaca County, Texas.

He married Nancy Ann Riney on April 23, 1799 in Washington County, Kentucky. Nancy Ann Riney was born about 1780 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. She was the daughter of Thomas Riney, Jr. and Sarah Ann Shircliff. She died about 1844 in Lavaca County, Texas.

Both she and Bernard are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lavaca County, Texas on some land that he had deeded to the church.

From all the history I can find, the entire Brown family was very religious, and wherever they lived, they always managed to participate in the erecting of a church in that town.

Their first three children were all born in Kentucky. Two children were born in Perry County, Missouri.

By December of 1833 they were living in Gonzales, Texas. The area where they settled was a part of Mexico at that time. In 1841, it was annexed to the Republic of Texas.

In the spring of 1836, they were forced to flee from their home in what is known as "The Runaway Scrape". This was to avoid the advancing Mexican army. As the Mexican army advanced, they killed every settler in their path, and they stole whatever livestock, furniture, or possession of the settlers they could get their hands on. Most of the settlers went to Nacogdoches, Texas and waited until it was safe to return home.

Thomas also raised two children who were not his own. In 1856, a recent widower, Thomas Edwin Murphy, was on his way to Washington-On-The-Brazos to take his three children to his sister for her to raise. At Halletsville, he died and later his infant daughter died.

His remaining children, Stephen and Thomas Murphy were left in the care of Thomas Brown.

Stephen later married Susan Mary Longley Brown, the widow of Thomas' son, William Thomas. Stephen Murphy – Born: 1/25/1853 in Nueces Co., TX died: 1917

Thomas Murphy later married Sophia McKimson, a grandniece of Thomas Bernard Brown. Thomas Murphy – Born: 1853 in Nueces County, TX

Sarah Jane Elizabeth Murphy (infant daughter of Thomas Edwin Murphy) Born: 1856 in Nueces County, TX. Died: Dec, 1857 in Halletsville, TX
--- End Quote ---

J D Murphy death certificate that specifies John Murphy from Pleasanton, Texas as the Informant. Filling out the death certificate for his brother William's son and being from Pleasanton is enough proof that this is John Emmett Murphy who can now be shown as the son of Thomas B. Murphy.

Testimony from his granddaughter Malydaln Janet Jones
